Competitve Analysis
Before designing the app, it's crucial to research the competition. I conducted a SWOT analysis on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. Each has its drawbacks—Apple Music is limited to Apple devices, and Spotify's shuffle feature can be restrictive. However, I noticed one key feature missing across all three platforms.
Problem
A feature that was missing from these applications was that they lacked a smart clean feature—one that removes skipped/least played songs to an archival playlist.
Solution
The solution would be to create an app that has this cleaning tool feature. It will have options to clean it now, every 30 days, every 60 days, or every 90 days.
User testing
As part of the analysis, user interactions with Spotify, Apple Music, and similar apps were closely observed. One user navigated Spotify, highlighting the most frequently used features and how they engaged with them.
User interview
After figuring out a feature each music application lacked, A user interview was developed on Google Forms. Before delving into the questions about the feature, it was important to gather information about how often users skip songs on playlists. Majority of users stated that it was sometimes.
User Interview Data
After that, data was gathered about how frequently users clean their playlists and if they would be interested in a feature that automatically cleans their playlists for them. While most appreciated the automatic clean option, some would rather approve a list of songs before automatically removing them from their playlists.
Why this benefits the users?
The benefit of this feature is to constantly keep the user’s playlist clean. It also helps the user maintain a fresh, clutter-free music library without the hassle of manually managing songs. It even saves the time and effort of manually deleting songs. It keeps the user’s library automatically curated and prevents them wasting too much time managing their playlists.
Cleaning Data
How often do people clean their playlists? According to the survey, more than half of the participants admitted they rarely do. Later, they were asked if they’d be interested in a feature that automatically cleans their playlists after a certain time period, eliminating the need for manual upkeep.
Archival Playlist
Afterward, users were asked if they’d be interested in an archival playlist with a 30-day review period, and more than half said yes. One user suggested an option to restore removed songs to avoid forgetting them. Many users also stated they would like approval over their songs before applying them to the archival playlist.
USER FLOW
Wireframes
For the app, wireframes were created before designing the feature. Since the feature was a simple button, the aesthetics were prioritized before wireframing for the feature. The button allowed users to select how often they wanted their playlists cleaned, leading to an approval list where they could choose which songs to archive. These are the wireframes for the main pages of the app.
These wireframes outline the features and their key elements, including the archive playlist and music player.
Visual Design
This is the visual design of the Music App called Riffstorm, which will include the feature, a music app featuring a unique smart clean function.
The design was crafted to stand out from typical social media apps, ensuring a cohesive theme where even a simple button blends seamlessly with the app’s aesthetics. The overall look balances a warm tone with a bold, rock-inspired vibe.
